SAMHSA: Responsible Health IT for Behavioral Health

SAMHSA newsletter about HIPAA and EHRs.  Included is information on their “Open Behavioral Health Information Technology Architecture (OBHITA) Project:”

“This project is focused on standardizing methods for data collection and sharing while maintaining compatibility with behavioral health-specific patient privacy regulations. These efforts include the development of an open-source software platform for States to manage their safety-net behavioral health services network.”

It’s nice to see SAMHSA is diligently working on increasing technology in behavioral health while being mindful of HIPAA, proper authorizations to release information etc.  I think there is great potential for information sharing without privacy protections in place.
